Description
This course features Snap-On certifications delivered through NC3 for the Zeus Oscilloscope, which lead into CAN diagnostics. Class time will feature hand-on use of the Zeus scan tool and scope operations with trainers, followed by shop time with testing CAN bus faults on vehicles.
Course Objectives

  1. Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

    1. Use the scan tool, including recording data and using functional output tests
    2. Obtain Zeus Level I scanner certificate from Snap-On
    3. Set up parameters on an oscilloscope
    4. Obtain Zeus Level II oscilloscope certificate from Snap-On
    5. Learn theory and operation of CAN bus networks
    6. Find and follow CAN wiring and associated modules on a diagram
    7. Find and test CAN circuits on a vehicle
Outline of Instruction
  1. 1) Complete ShopKey Certification
    a) Follow curriculum in PC lab
    i) research specs and procedures
    ii) follow diagnostic path
    iii) create estimates
    iv) Complete online exam through NC3 to obtain certificate
    2) Complete Snap-On’s curriculum for Zeus scanners - Level I
    a) Use a Zeus in the classroom with an OBDII vehicle Simulator
    i) Retrieve faults
    ii) Record data streams
    iii) Perform functional output tests from different modules
    b) Compare similarities to other brands of scan tools
    c) Complete an online exam through NC3 (National Coalition of Certification Centers)
    3) Complete Snap-On’s curriculum for Zeus Oscilloscopes – Level II
    a) Use the oscilloscope in the classroom with a pulse generator/vehicle simulator
    i) Review basics of scope functions
    ii) Set up scale and sweep properly
    iii) Set up different inputs (voltage, frequency, amperage, etc)
    iv) Set up multiple traces
    v) Capture and analyze data
    b) Compare functions to all brands of Oscilloscopes
    c) Complete an online exam through NC3 (National Coalition of Certification Centers)
    4) CAN bus theory
    a) Basic wiring including terminating resistors
    b) Network communications, multiplexing sensors
    c) Find wiring in diagrams
    5) Hands-On - Shop
    a) Use Zeus scan tools on vehicles in the shop
    b) Capture raw data from various sensors
    c) Measure current ramps of injectors
    d) Measure CAN communication wires
    e) Diagnose a vehicle with a preset CAN fault
